On March 19, DonorUA organized a mobile blood donation event at St. Nicholas Church, where 54 residents and guests of Kyiv donated blood for military and civilian patients (photos are here). It was the first such event in the church, which celebrates its 115th anniversary this year. Among the donors were both those who regularly participate in DonorUA events and believers who donated blood for the first time. The procedure was conducted by specialists from the Kyiv City Blood Center.
"Some Christians consider blood transfusions a sin, but we are glad that the parishioners of St. Nicholas Church understand the value of donation, especially during a full-scale war. Believers pray for Ukraine's victory and contribute to it with their own blood to help wounded soldiers and civilians affected by shelling, as well as thousands of patients with serious illnesses. We thank everyone for this incredible opportunity - when faith and medicine work together for a common victory, there is no doubt in it," comments Iryna Slavinska, co-founder of DonorUA and President of the All-Ukrainian Association of Blood Donors.
Each donation can save from 1 to 3 lives, so 54 donors potentially gave hope for recovery to 162 patients. There are many wounded soldiers, children, and adults with oncological diseases, and other patients in Kyiv hospitals who need transfusions either once or regularly. Therefore, we thank everyone who responded and donated blood. Thanks also to Aunt Clara's pastry shop, which has supported DonorUA events not for the first time and treats donors with fresh pastries.
"On the eve of every holiday, our parish participates in helping people affected by the war, as well as our defenders. For example, when the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station was blown up, our parish collected 10 tons of necessary aid for people from those regions. Then another 5 tons were brought. Before Christmas, we collected warm clothing for our defenders. Parishioners provided cookies and other products. Now we know about many losses and injuries due to large-scale actions in the East, and many people need blood. So we are glad to join this and thank DonorUA for trusting us. I see that there were many of our parishioners, as well as our neighbors, people of the capital," says Father Pavlo Vyshkovskyi, the rector of St. Nicholas Parish.
